What should you do if someone makes a racist joke or a sexist comment? Confronting these things can be among the most uncomfortable things you’ll ever have to do, but I feel that it’s more important than ever to stand up. There are lots of articles and free online courses on bystander intervention, and I’ve found it helpful to look at several and thing about what makes sense to me. Sometimes I find the examples in these a little too pat, too perfect and clean, so I need to figure out what I’d really say in a particular situation. And then, honestly, I need to practice because as much as I believe in this, it’s really hard and uncomfortable to do.
