My friend Iana has an amazing hair studio in Austin called Freakflag by Iana (seriously, if you’re in the Austin area, check it out! https://www.freakflagbyiana.com/) and I’ve been thinking a lot about what that means in terms of the world of work. Can you really be your artsy, quirky self at work?
New research seems to indicate changing perceptions of tattoos (http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0018726718782597), though there are still plenty of folks who think they’re trashy or mean you’re not very smart. But even in some very conservative professions like finance, things are changing (https://www.statista.com/statistics/512680/perception-of-tattooed-people-in-certain-occupations/).
Our cultural norms around creative expression seems to be evolving, and it’s becoming increasingly accepted for people to present their happily idiosyncratic selves in interviews and on the job. Unfortunately, it’s not all good news. Check back Thursday for more.
