For many people, the start of the year is a time for changes and new beginnings. I was never good at making resolutions, and have joked in the past that my last one was to stop making resolutions—the only one I ever followed through on.
But that said, I do think this is a great time of year to start new projects. I update my resume this time of year, in part because it’s an easy way to remember to do it. It’s also a good time for tasks like that if you got some time to rest over the holidays so you can work on those tasks with renewed vigor.
Some companies with fiscal years that follow calendar years also have new budgets, so it might be a great time to ask for a raise or a promotion. Write a list of your accomplishments to bring to that conversation so you can keep yourself on track. (Also, it never hurts to have a list of your successes! It’s a good motivator when you feel low, and it’s a fabulous talking point if someone approaches you about a project.)
If you’re looking for a job, capitalize on the general optimism this time of year and let that energize your search. Reach out to people you’ve lost contact with. Refresh your workspace. (I really only clean and reorganize mine this time of year.) Start new habits like taking breaks to stand up and stretch every hour. Infuse your job-hunt with the positivity you get from these small steps. Something wonderful is around the corner!
